Why an Irish-looking website may not be an Irish trader
A .ie address, Irish flag or Dublin contact line can make a shop feel local, but presentation and legal identity are different things. The CCPC warns that Irish-sounding shops may have no genuine Irish presence and recommends checking official registers, real contact details and independent reviews.
Start with the party named in the terms and conditions. If no legal entity, geographic address or reliable contact route is disclosed, you do not yet know who would owe a refund or answer a complaint. That missing identity matters more as the purchase value rises.
- Do not treat a domain name as proof of incorporation.
- Look for the entity responsible for returns and refunds.
- Check whether contact details work before ordering.
- Search copied policy text and inconsistent brand names.
Connect the website to the company record
Search by registration number whenever one is supplied. Match the result to the website's legal name and examine status, incorporation date and registered address. A young company is not automatically unsafe, but it gives you less operating history and may justify a smaller first order.
A full company report adds available directors and filing history. Compare those records with the people presenting the business. Differences are not proof of fraud, but unexplained differences should be resolved through an independently sourced contact before you transfer a material amount.
Check the transaction as well as the company
A real company can be impersonated, and a genuine retailer can still provide poor service. Verify the payment instruction, delivery promise, refund terms and product evidence independently. Be cautious when the bank beneficiary is unrelated to the trader or the seller pushes communication into a private messaging app.
Card payment may offer chargeback options if goods are not supplied, subject to the issuer's process and time limits. Bank transfer usually gives you less practical leverage. If a seller insists on an unusual method while offering a time-limited bargain, pause rather than letting urgency replace verification.
- Confirm the final price, delivery date and returns address.
- Use a trusted channel to verify changed payment details.
- Capture screenshots of the offer and checkout.
- Contact your bank quickly if fraud is suspected.
When the €11.99 report is worth ordering
The free profile is enough for a first identity check. Order the full report when the purchase or deposit is meaningful, when the shop is unfamiliar, or when you need a dated record of directors and filings before approving a transfer.
The report does not guarantee delivery or authenticate the website. It strengthens the identity layer of your decision and gives you evidence to combine with consumer checks, independent reviews, payment protection and current CCPC guidance.
